Diktat vs. Monologue

Monologue is a dictation app for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. In this comparison, only Monologue and Diktat name a watch app of their own (as of 5 August 2026).

Three things differ: how the watch fits in, how you pay, and what happens to your text.

The core difference.

Both apps support the Apple Watch, but in different ways. Monologue ships its own watch app, included in the subscription. With Diktat, the watch records and the iPhone transcribes. Universal Clipboard carries the text to your Mac or iPad, without an account. That chain takes a moment, and the iPhone has to be reachable. In return, what you said never leaves your devices.

The second difference is trying and paying. Monologue has no permanent free plan, only a trial with 1,000 words and 10 notes. After that it costs $15 a month or $144 a year. You can use Diktat indefinitely with 5 dictations a day. The purchase is one-time: from €9.99 at launch, later €19.99. That price covers iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. The Mac is a separate purchase.

The third difference is the text itself. With Diktat, no language model runs over your words. No smoothing, no rephrasing, no summarizing, not even as an option. No word changes unless you ask. What Monologue offers to do with recognized text is on their site.

When Monologue is the better fit.

You want one app from a single vendor, across Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. The subscription keeps it evolving.

You use the vendor's other apps. In that case, the bundle plan at $24 a month can pay off.

You want new features without a new purchase decision. The subscription includes them.

When Diktat is the better fit.

Your dictations should stay on your own devices. With Diktat nothing sits in between. There is no server.

You want to pay once. iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch sit in one purchase, the Mac in a second one. No subscription.

You want your words unchanged. No language model reshapes them.

Questions about the comparison.

Does Monologue have a free version?

No. Monologue has a trial with 1,000 words and 10 notes (as of 5 August 2026). After that the subscription costs $15 a month or $144 a year. Diktat has a permanent free tier: 5 dictations a day, every day.

How do the watch setups of Monologue and Diktat differ?

Monologue ships its own watch app, included in the subscription. With Diktat the watch records, the iPhone transcribes, and Universal Clipboard brings the text to your Mac or iPad. That takes a moment and needs a reachable iPhone, but it runs without an account and without a subscription. Which matters more is your call.

Does Monologue run offline?

Monologue's site names local models as an option (“no connection required”, as of 5 August 2026). Diktat always recognizes on the device; after the model download, a dictation needs no connection. Only Apple's built-in recognition loads system language assets on demand.

What does Diktat cost compared to Monologue over three years?

Diktat costs from €9.99 once for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, later €19.99. The Mac app is a second one-time purchase. Monologue on the annual plan costs $144 a year, so $432 over three years. Diktat has no ongoing costs.
